Description

Chinese Beef and Broccoli is a flavorful one-pan dish with tender beef, vibrant broccoli, and a rich sauce. It is a convenient and healthy meal that you can easily prepare at home, allowing you to customize flavors to your taste. This recipe simplifies the classic with minimal prep and cleanup, perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Cooked rice, for serving
  • sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the flank steak against the grain to ensure tenderness.
  2. In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and let it sit while you prepare other ingredients. This step marinates the beef.
  3. In a large pan or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the marinated beef to the pan in a single layer. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until browned. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
  5. In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add the minced garlic and ginger. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Toss in the broccoli florets and stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until they turn bright green and tender-crisp.
  7. Return the cooked beef to the pan and mix well with the broccoli.
  8. In a small bowl, mix the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, and water until smooth. Pour this sauce mixture into the pan over the beef and broccoli.
  9. Let it cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened and coats the beef and broccoli nicely.
  10. Remove from heat, garnish with sesame seeds if desired, and serve hot over cooked rice.

Notes

  • Use fresh broccoli and quality beef for the best flavor.
  • For more tender beef, marinate it for up to an hour.
  • Adjust broccoli cooking time for desired tenderness.
  • Increase soy sauce and oyster sauce for more sauce, or add beef broth for depth.
  • Add red pepper flakes or sliced chili peppers for a bit of heat.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
  • Freeze cooked dish for up to 3 months; thaw overnight and reheat on the stovetop.
  • Serve Chinese Beef and Broccoli over rice or noodles.
  • Consider adding bell peppers, snap peas, or carrots for extra vegetables.
  • Substitute flank steak with sirloin, chicken, or shrimp.
  • For a vegetarian option, use tofu and vegetable stir-fry sauce.
  • If you do not have oyster sauce, substitute with soy sauce and a bit of sugar.
