  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • For the Filling:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • For the Frosting:
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
  6. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
  8. Scatter the chopped pecans and chocolate chips over the sugar mixture.
  9. Starting from a long side, tightly roll up the dough. Pinch the seam to seal.
  10. Cut the roll into 12 equal slices. Place the slices cut-side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  11. Cover the dish and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  12. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  14. While the rolls are baking, prepare the frosting. Beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually beat in powdered sugar and vanilla extract until combined. Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
  15. Spread the frosting over the warm chocolate pecan cinnamon rolls.
