Description

A classic Dutch Apple Pie recipe featuring a flaky crust, a tender apple filling spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, and a delightful crumbly streusel topping. This easy-to-make dessert is perfect for any occasion and fills your home with a warm, inviting aroma.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 68 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1 ½ cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix 2 ½ cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Add chilled butter and mix until crumbly. Gradually add ice water until the dough holds together.
  3. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, ¾ cup granulated sugar, lemon juice, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg. Toss well and set aside.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place the crust in the pan, trimming any excess.
  6. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading evenly.
  7. In another bowl, combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1 ½ cups oats, 1 cup flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and melted butter. Mix until crumbly.
  8. Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the apple filling.
  9. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
  10. Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for 15-20 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • For best flavor, use fresh, in-season apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
  • Add a pinch of allspice or cardamom for extra flavor.
  • Do not overmix the topping ingredients; mix just until crumbly.
  • Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing to help the filling set.
  • Consider using maple syrup or honey instead of granulated sugar in the filling for a healthier option.
  • Leftover pie can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • Freeze wrapped pie tightly for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
  • Reheat slices in the microwave for 20-30 seconds or the whole pie in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 15-20 minutes.
