Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 6–8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 cups thinly sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- ¾ cup granulated sugar (for filling)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup brown sugar (for topping)
- 1 ½ cups rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a bowl, mix 2 ½ cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Add chilled butter and mix until crumbly. Gradually add ice water until the dough holds together.
- Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, ¾ cup granulated sugar, lemon juice, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg. Toss well and set aside.
- On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place the crust in the pan, trimming any excess.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading evenly.
- In another bowl, combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1 ½ cups oats, 1 cup flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and melted butter. Mix until crumbly.
- Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the apple filling.
- Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
- Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for 15-20 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- For best flavor, use fresh, in-season apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
- Add a pinch of allspice or cardamom for extra flavor.
- Do not overmix the topping ingredients; mix just until crumbly.
- Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing to help the filling set.
- Consider using maple syrup or honey instead of granulated sugar in the filling for a healthier option.
- Leftover pie can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
- Freeze wrapped pie tightly for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat slices in the microwave for 20-30 seconds or the whole pie in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 15-20 minutes.
