Description

A delightful dessert featuring ripe pears baked in a creamy, vanilla-infused custard. This easy pear custard pie is perfect for autumn gatherings or a sweet finish to any meal, offering a comforting taste without a fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 9-inch pie crust, unbaked
  • 3 ripe pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and set aside.
  2. Arrange the sliced pears evenly over the bottom of the pie crust.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt until smooth and well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the pears in the pie crust, ensuring the pears are evenly covered.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden.
  6. Allow the pear custard pie to cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing and serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • If your pears are very ripe, they might fall apart during baking, resulting in a more jam-like texture, which is still delicious.
  • Using too much flour can make the custard rubbery; stick to the recommended amount.
  • For a neater slice, chill the pie before cutting.
  • This pear custard pie can be stored covered in the refrigerator for about two days. Reheat gently if desired. Freezing is not recommended as the texture can become unpleasant.
  • Variations include using apples or peaches instead of pears, or adding a splash of almond extract or a handful of berries.
  • Canned pears can be used, but drain them very well.
  • Pear skins can be left on if they are thin, for a more rustic feel.
  • For a dairy-free version, try plant-based milk and vegan butter, though this has not been tested.
