Description
Delicious red velvet cinnamon rolls with a creamy frosting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup whole milk, warmed
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons red food coloring
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
- Cream cheese frosting (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and granulated sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, unsweetened cocoa powder, and half of the sugar mixture.
- In another bowl, beat together the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and red food coloring. Pour this mixture into the yeast mixture.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean cloth. Allow it to rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and ground cinnamon together.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangular shape (about 16×12 inches) on a floured surface.
- Evenly spread the softened butter over the dough and then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture on top.
- Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log.
- Using a sharp knife or dental floss, slice the log into 12 equal pieces.
- Place the cinnamon rolls cut-side up in a greased baking dish. Cover again and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- After the second rise, bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until lightly golden.
- Allow the rolls to cool for about 15 minutes before topping them with cream cheese frosting.
Notes
- Store leftover rolls in an airtight container.
- These rolls can be made ahead and frozen before baking.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of cinnamon to your taste.
