Description

Delicious red velvet cinnamon rolls with a creamy frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons red food coloring
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • Cream cheese frosting (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and granulated sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, unsweetened cocoa powder, and half of the sugar mixture.
  3. In another bowl, beat together the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and red food coloring. Pour this mixture into the yeast mixture.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean cloth. Allow it to rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and ground cinnamon together.
  8. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangular shape (about 16×12 inches) on a floured surface.
  9. Evenly spread the softened butter over the dough and then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture on top.
  10. Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log.
  11. Using a sharp knife or dental floss, slice the log into 12 equal pieces.
  12. Place the cinnamon rolls cut-side up in a greased baking dish. Cover again and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  13. While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  14. After the second rise, bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until lightly golden.
  15. Allow the rolls to cool for about 15 minutes before topping them with cream cheese frosting.
