Ingredients

  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional toppings: breadcrumbs, parsley, or additional cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbly.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens slightly.
  4. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper, mixing well to combine.
  5. Remove the pot from heat and add the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is creamy.
  6. Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and mix until the pasta is evenly coated.
  7. If desired, sprinkle breadcrumbs or additional cheese on top and place the pot over low heat to melt the cheese further.
  8. Once everything is well combined and heated through, serve hot.
