Description
This classic French Onion Dip features deeply caramelized onions blended into creamy sour cream and cream cheese, delivering a rich and savory appetizer perfect for parties, snacks, or gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp honey
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup cream cheese
- 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus more for garnishing
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a hot skillet, melt the butter together with the olive oil over medium-low heat to prepare for cooking the onions.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt to the skillet. Cook slowly over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, allowing the onions to soften and turn a rich golden brown and caramelized, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Once the onions are deeply caramelized towards the end of cooking, turn off the heat and stir in the honey to evenly incorporate a subtle sweetness into the onions. Adjust honey quantity to taste.
- Transfer the caramelized onions, along with any flavorful juices left in the skillet, into a large bowl. Add the sour cream, cream cheese, and one tablespoon of chopped chives.
- Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and creamy.
- Taste the dip and modify the seasoning by adding extra salt, pepper, or honey according to your preference.
- Just before serving, garnish the dip with additional chopped chives and some caramelized onions to enhance appearance and flavor.
- Serve the French Onion Dip chilled or at room temperature with your choice of chips, crackers, or fresh vegetable sticks.
