Description

This classic French Onion Dip features deeply caramelized onions blended into creamy sour cream and cream cheese, delivering a rich and savory appetizer perfect for parties, snacks, or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus more for garnishing
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a hot skillet, melt the butter together with the olive oil over medium-low heat to prepare for cooking the onions.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt to the skillet. Cook slowly over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, allowing the onions to soften and turn a rich golden brown and caramelized, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Once the onions are deeply caramelized towards the end of cooking, turn off the heat and stir in the honey to evenly incorporate a subtle sweetness into the onions. Adjust honey quantity to taste.
  4. Transfer the caramelized onions, along with any flavorful juices left in the skillet, into a large bowl. Add the sour cream, cream cheese, and one tablespoon of chopped chives.
  5. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and creamy.
  6. Taste the dip and modify the seasoning by adding extra salt, pepper, or honey according to your preference.
  7. Just before serving, garnish the dip with additional chopped chives and some caramelized onions to enhance appearance and flavor.
  8. Serve the French Onion Dip chilled or at room temperature with your choice of chips, crackers, or fresh vegetable sticks.
