Description

Classic homemade Apple Pie with a flaky crust and warm spiced apple filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Perfect Pie Crust Recipe
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 8 cups thinly sliced apples, peeled and cored (Granny Smith recommended)
  • ⅔ cup lightly packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Coarse sugar, optional

Instructions

  1. Set aside a 9-inch pie plate and preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Stir and cook until the apples soften and the mixture thickens, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
  3. While the filling cools, divide your prepared pie dough into two halves. Roll out one disc to about 1/8-inch thickness and transfer it into the pie plate.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water.
  5. Spoon the cooled apple filling into the bottom crust. Roll out the second dough disc and place it on top or create a lattice pattern. Cut vents if using a solid crust. Trim and seal the edges.
  6. Brush the top crust with the egg wash and sprinkle coarse sugar if desired.
  7. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C). Then reduce to 350°F (175°C) and bake for approximately 40 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
  8. If the edges brown too quickly, tent with aluminum foil.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before slicing.

Notes

  • Allowing the pie to cool helps the filling set.
  • Use a variety of apples for a richer flavor.
