Description
Classic homemade Apple Pie with a flaky crust and warm spiced apple filling.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 Perfect Pie Crust Recipe
- ¼ cup butter
- 8 cups thinly sliced apples, peeled and cored (Granny Smith recommended)
- ⅔ cup lightly packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon water
- Coarse sugar, optional
Instructions
- Set aside a 9-inch pie plate and preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Stir and cook until the apples soften and the mixture thickens, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
- While the filling cools, divide your prepared pie dough into two halves. Roll out one disc to about 1/8-inch thickness and transfer it into the pie plate.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water.
- Spoon the cooled apple filling into the bottom crust. Roll out the second dough disc and place it on top or create a lattice pattern. Cut vents if using a solid crust. Trim and seal the edges.
- Brush the top crust with the egg wash and sprinkle coarse sugar if desired.
- Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C). Then reduce to 350°F (175°C) and bake for approximately 40 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
- If the edges brown too quickly, tent with aluminum foil.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before slicing.
Notes
- Allowing the pie to cool helps the filling set.
- Use a variety of apples for a richer flavor.
